Newcomer Car Loan Documents in Canada: The Full Checklist
The full documentation checklist for newcomers applying for a Calgary car loan (passport, permit, SIN, address, income) with visa-by-visa notes.
Calgary's newcomer communities (Filipino, Punjabi, Tamil, Eritrean, Sudanese, Venezuelan) all hit the same documentation list when they apply for a car loan. The list is shorter than most people expect, but the order matters because some documents depend on others and having everything ready before you apply means the difference between a 24-hour approval and a week-long delay.
The standard newcomer documentation list
- Passport. Current, with valid stamp or visa. Expired passports are not accepted even if your permit is still valid. Make sure the passport you present matches the name on your permit exactly.
- Permit document. Work permit, study permit, PGWP, COPR/landing paper, or PR card. The original document or a clear scan is required. Screenshots from the IRCC portal are not accepted by most lenders.
- SIN. Permanent or temporary 9-prefixed. The SIN is used for tax reporting purposes, not for credit checking. You will not receive a hard credit pull based on your SIN alone.
- Proof of Calgary address. Lease (signed by landlord), utility bill (Enmax, ATCO, Telus), or bank statement, all within the last 60 days. The address must be a Calgary address, not a PO box.
- Proof of income. Last 2 paystubs or signed offer letter on company letterhead or 3 months of bank statements showing regular deposits (self-employed newcomers).
- Driver's licence. Alberta licence preferred. Class 7 learner's or international driving permit acceptable for the financing application itself. You will need a valid Alberta licence to register and insure the vehicle.
Visa-by-visa documentation notes
PGWP (Post-Graduation Work Permit)
Include your SAIT, U of C, Mount Royal, or other Canadian institution graduation confirmation if you have it. PGWP holders with a confirmed Canadian degree get priority routing through the manufacturer-backed newcomer programs because lenders view the Canadian education credential as a strong stability signal. If you graduated from SAIT specifically, mention it; Calgary lenders see a high volume of SAIT graduates and process these files quickly.
LMIA / Employer-specific work permit
Include your LMIA approval letter. It proves a named Canadian employer, which to lenders is the strongest possible employment signal. The LMIA letter should show the employer name, your position, and the approved duration. Calgary energy-sector LMIA holders often have the best documentation because their employers routinely provide comprehensive offer letters with salary, benefits, and contract duration details.
Open work permit / Spousal Open Work Permit
Include your most recent paystub showing 3+ months of tenure with one employer. If you've changed jobs recently, add the offer letter from the new role. Open work permits don't name an employer, so the paystub evidence is what bridges that gap for the lender. Three months of consistent paystubs from one employer effectively makes your file equivalent to an LMIA holder in the lender's eyes.
TFW / Caregiver pathway
Include the IMM 5476 caregiver-pathway document if applicable, and a letter from your employer confirming hours and compensation. Caregiver-pathway buyers in Calgary typically work in the Beltline, Mount Pleasant, and Altadore neighbourhoods where private home-care demand is highest. Your employer letter should confirm weekly hours (most lenders want to see 30+ hours per week) and hourly or monthly compensation.
Common documentation mistakes newcomers make in Calgary
The most common mistake is not having a Calgary proof of address. If you just arrived and haven't signed a lease yet, a bank statement from a Canadian bank showing your Calgary address works. Open a no-fee account at any major bank branch in NE Calgary (Scotiabank on 36 Street NE, TD on Falconridge Boulevard, RBC on Castleridge Boulevard) and request a printed statement the same day you open the account.
The second most common mistake is bringing expired documents. Check every document before you come in. Expired passports, expired permits, and paystubs older than 60 days all cause delays. The lender will ask for updated documents and your file sits in queue until they arrive.
The third mistake is having mismatched names across documents. If your passport says one name and your work permit says another (common with transliteration differences), bring a statutory declaration or a notarised name-match letter. We can help you prepare this if needed.
What we do that other Calgary brokers don't
We pre-screen your documentation before submission. Missing the wrong document at the lender stage causes a 3-5 day delay. We catch it during the initial phone call so your file moves clean through to approval. That's why our newcomer approvals consistently hit the 24-hour target. Hammad reviews every document personally and tells you exactly what's missing or needs updating before the file goes to the lender. No surprises, no delays, no back-and-forth emails with a faceless broker.
