Direct answer
Use this checklist to stay focused on the vehicle, the complete cost and the written terms. It is general planning information, not legal or financial advice.
NewWheels helps organize the request and next steps. It does not approve credit, lend money, set rates, sell inventory or guarantee a vehicle. A participating dealership and applicable lender make those decisions.
1. Set a complete budget
- Choose a comfortable payment and a maximum total amount, not only a monthly target.
- Leave room for insurance, registration, fuel, maintenance, parking and seasonal tires.
- Use an estimate as a planning tool. Actual financing terms come later from the dealership and lender.
2. Prepare before shopping
- Get an insurance estimate for the type of vehicle you are considering.
- Write down your must-have features and what you are willing to compromise on.
- Gather only the documents specifically requested through a secure channel.
3. Review the vehicle
- Confirm the exact year, make, model, trim, mileage and vehicle identification number.
- Review the vehicle-history information and ask questions about anything unclear.
- For a used vehicle, consider an independent inspection before signing.
- Test the features that matter to you and make sure the vehicle fits your daily needs.
4. Review every number
- Ask for the vehicle price, taxes, fees, trade value, amount owing on the trade, down payment and total amount financed.
- Confirm the interest rate, payment frequency, term, payment amount and total cost of borrowing.
- Ask which products are optional and which amounts are included in the contract.
- Do not sign until the written numbers match what you understand.
5. Keep your records
- Keep copies of the bill of sale, financing contract, warranty documents and any product agreements.
- Save the dealership and salesperson contact information.
- Confirm insurance and registration steps before taking the vehicle.
Important risks and limitations
- A longer term can reduce a payment while increasing total borrowing cost.
- Negative equity can increase the amount financed and make a future exit harder.
- Insurance, registration, fuel, maintenance, parking and winter equipment affect affordability.
- Vehicle age, condition and lender policy can limit available options.
- No page, form or calculator result is an approval, rate or dealership quote.
